Time Passages

Wasn’t it yesterday,
they were toddlers just learning to swim
Four boys, cousins
Splashing and shrieking with glee
in the shallow end of the pool?

Now, they gather
Four tall, nearly young men
Testosterone ripples around them.

The eldest and tallest,
     I dub Adonis
Curly blond locks crown his head
The body sculpted from hours of workouts at the gym
     six pack, pecs, chiseled waist

The second eldest
Could have been the model
    for Michelangelo’s
          David.
Shiny, dark, curls
Big, intense brown eyes
Serious, focused
A mysterious air about him

Third, the lanky 15-year-old
No-frills body of the runner
       sleek, smooth
Twinkle in his eye
A sense of “I can do it” exudes from him
Let’s call him Bolt
      both for his speed
         and his amazing ability
             to fix anything

The fourth
Not quite as tall
but then not nearly finished growing
Light brown wavy locks
      always swinging,
Cause he rarely sits still
Loves adventure and outdoors
Huck Finn comes to mind.

They arrive together to enjoy the pool on one hot summer day
A stunning gaggle
Sauntering up the street
Could be the opening shot
       in a Clint Eastwood flick

Sheer delight to witness
I, Mima, welcome them.
      supply the sunscreen
along with the never-ending flow of snacks
No longer shrieks of childish delight
Rather the baritone banter
   of four young men
       savoring their time together.
