Persephone, Patti Kaufman
Mother to Mother
When they called to tell us: We have a baby for you
I, still fragile from loss, could hardly believe it
Nothing was ready; I dared not hope the day would come,
But they placed her in my arms,
She looked up to me: hineni…. here am I
From that moment to this, I dreamt of telling you…
Your treasure has been treasured each day, each passing year
She is now woman and mother, a person of substance and strength
And beauty. She carries an aura about her,
A charisma I feel sure was gifted from you.
What was it like for you? I imagine your fear, asking:
How can this be happening?
This cannot be happening,
Did your heart stop when you knew it true?
A life attached itself inside you uninvited, unsought, unimagined;
Not the right time nor place
Nevertheless, it was clear: hineni….here am I
Do you believe in Karma?
Do you think it might have been beshert; planned by the fates?
While you faced that trauma of creation thrust upon you,
I faced the opposite, a life stolen from me
Somehow our destinies crossed
You chose to nurture that seed within.
You put your life on hold, and held on.
What courage that must have taken
We may never meet. Timing would suggest not,
But I believe we can send messages through the ether.
Here is mine to you: You are a part of me. I am connected to you.
We are tethered by that soul,
By the love that begot life and the life that begot love.
