Tell It Like It Is

Mid-sixties, the burgeoning of the feminist tidal wave
My sister-in-law’s supervisor at the Mental Health Clinic
Said something inaccurate and inappropriate at a staff meeting
Not reaching the level of sexual harassment
But still sexist at its core

So, Bonnie decided to deal with it
She confronted him
(All supervisors were men back then)
She explained the error of his ways
     calmly
         politely

He listened
He nodded
But,
     no apology was given

This set Bonnie’s hair on fire
Her tolerance for men behaving badly had reached rock bottom
She looked him straight in the eye and said:
Oh, I get it…
    you’re afraid
         if you apologize,
              your penis
                   will fall off.
